Browsers

Whichever internet browser you use you must make sure it's up to date with the latest
security updates to keep your system safe from cyber attack.

Updates:

If you have Internet Explorer 6 be aware its many unpatched vulnerabilities can allow malware to easily attack your system
and you should update to Version 7 using  Windows Update or by using the link below for your Windows version.

DOWNLOAD Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1  for systems running versions of Windows prior to Windows XP

DOWNLOAD Internet Explorer 7  for Windows XP Home and Pro, 32 and 64-bit

The latest version of Internet Explorer is Version 8. It is available as a Windows update or directly from the following links. There are some
incompatibility issues  to be aware of, involving graphical errors, but it is widely agreed it has superior security to previous versions.
IE8 comes with SmartScreen Filter built in to protect from malicious sites, malware and phishing.
If a website doesn't display properly you can run Compatibility Mode to fix any errors.

DOWNLOAD Internet Explorer 8  for Windows XP Home and Pro, 32bit

DOWNLOAD Internet Explorer 8  for Windows XP Pro 64bit

DOWNLOAD Internet Explorer 8  for Windows Vista

To choose a browser that will protect you against cyber attacks and ID theft compare the most popular ones at this Wiki page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_web_browsers

Whichever browser you use please be aware that opening more than one browser window can make you vulnerable to cyber attacks.
Whenever you check your email or enter a password in the browser always use a separate browser session. When you enter login details for most sites
they record a cookie for the session, if you visit a cyber attack site in another tab of the same session the login details in the cookie can be read and recorded.

To prevent hackers stealing cookie information DOWNLOAD  Ad-Aware Free Anti-Malware 8.2

DOWNLOAD Mozilla Firefox  This is the browser I use because it uses stronger security
than Internet Explorer 7, rarely has any outstanding security issues (where Internet Explorer always has several issues outstanding)
and has a large variety of plugins to increase security online.

DOWNLOAD  Opera  Lightweight browser with its own set of widget add-ons.

DOWNLOAD  SeaMonkey  Web-browser, e-mail, newsgroup and feed client, IRC chat, and HTML editing all in one application.

Browser security add-ons:

DOWNLOAD  RefControl  Addon for Firefox to keep your browsing history private.

Web of Trust  Addon for Firefox and Internet Explorer. 27 million rated websites and 3.8 million websites blocked as malicious.

DOWNLOAD  AdBlock Plus  Addon for Firefox, Flock, SeaMonkey and Internet Explorer. Blocks banners and other advertisements
from every webpage you visit making surfing a lot quicker and avoiding ad-based cyber attacks.

Ghostery  Shows users exactly which trackers are present on a given Web page,
making it much easier to control who's gathering information about you.

DOWNLOAD  AVG LinkScanner  Scans the pages behind all the links you click or type into your browser.
Scans the results of web searches in Google, Yahoo!, Bing, AOL, Ask and eBay so you know whether a page is safe before clicking on it.

DOWNLOAD  McAfee SiteAdvisor a plug-in for Internet Explorer and Firefox, tests, analyzes and rates websites in detail for unsafe or
annoying practices such as dangerous downloads, spamming, misuse of personal information and browser hijacking.

DOWNLOAD Flashblock  Blocks Flash, Shockwave and Authorware in webpages. For Firefox, Flock, and Seamonkey v2.0.
NOTE: Be warned, Flashblock will prevent all Flash-based content from running on a webpage, including video.

DOWNLOAD  Comodo VerificationEngine  Checks the Trust Credentials of websites and prevents phishing and pharming attacks.

DOWNLOAD  CustomizeGoogle  Enhances Google search results by adding extra information (like links to Yahoo, Ask.com, MSN etc)
and removing unwanted information (like ads and spam). Addon for Firefox.

You can run tests called Acid2  and Acid3 to see if your browser has support for common graphics rendering techniques like CSS and Java.

Browser/email settings in Internet Explorer Tools/Options to secure:

 Disable Unsigned ActiveX

Setup Outlook Express/Windows Mail for Plain Text only

IE Font Download = reset to Disable

IE Launching programs and files in a IFrame = reset to Disable

IE Websites in less privileged web content can navigate into this zone = reset to Disable

IE "Content" tab, "Publishers" button. By default you should not have anything listed under "Trusted Publishers" - "Remove" any unknowns

Netscape

If you use Netscape you should know it is no longer supported by the company, no new updates for it have been released since 2008
and due to serious security vulnerabilities it should not be used to surf the web.
