My helpdesk uses Fog Creek Copilot to create a secure remote connection between our computers.
This lets me control your mouse and keyboard so I can investigate and fix Windows problems,
remove viruses and malware, configure existing software and install additional security software.

If you are connecting on a weekday (between 9am Monday
and 8pm Saturday GMT) Copilot will request a $5 connection
fee so please make sure your payment details are protected
otherwise your creditcard details may be vulnerable to
active viruses on your system.

When you connect for free at the weekend I can personally
immunise your pc to make sure your payment details will
be safe from security threats. The weekend service is primarily
for antivirus maintenance but users requiring troubleshooting
for other problems are also welcome to connect.

Please describe the symptoms of your pc's problem and
I will investigate the cause and implement the solution.

When you are satisfied that your pc is running error-free again
you will be prompted to pay for the service through PayPal.
You are only charged for a complete hour, so if for example your
maintenance took 2 hours and 55 minutes you only pay for 2 hours.

Most pc problems can be fixed within the hour and many
systems will already have an adequate security solution,
however it is recommended to allow all stages of the service
to be completed where necessary. To keep the length of your
service to a minimum full virus scans and Windows Update
will be initiated but can be completed in your own time.

NOTE - If you receive any User Account Control alerts when you run
Copilot Host please cancel them to allow the maintenance service to continue.

NOTE - Fog Creek Copilot removes the desktop wallpaper of the person being helped only while the helper is connected. This dramatically speeds up the connection and improves the Fog Creek Copilot experience. Once disconnected, your wallpaper will return.

NOTE - If you become disconnected from the helpdesk at any point simply run Copilot Host again to reconnect. This may happen if your pc needs to be restarted in the course of maintenance.

NOTE -  If your pc fails to restart properly during any part of the service you may need to switch off the pc manually by holding the power button down for a few seconds, then switch it on as normal. If it still fails to start up properly keep tapping F8 after you switch it on until the Windows Advanced Options Menu appears and select the Last Known Good Configuration to restore your pc to
its last working state.



How To Connect Using Copilot

Fog Creek Copilot helps you fix someone else's computer problems by connecting both
computers together. The helper can control the mouse and keyboard to help fix the problem.

Maintenance takes from 3 to 4 hours depending on your pc's problems and processing speed.

Call or email the helpdesk for a Copilot Invitation Code which will be emailed to you.

The email message will contain an Invitation Code which you type in at www.copilot.com

You will be prompted to download and run the Copilot Host program.

I will be waiting for your connection and, once connected, our Day Pass will begin.

You must connect within 72 hours or the Day Pass will expire.

PAYMENT

To keep your payment details safe from active keyloggers use a free
antikeylogger like QFX KeyScrambler to protect what you type.

Also make sure you only have one browser window open while
you make your payment to protect the PayPal cookie from snoopers.

You should also have a firewall and antivirus monitoring
software before entering your creditcard details online.

If you are worried about your security while paying for this service, or for the
connection fee through Co-pilot, you are welcome to connect for free at the weekend,
Co-pilot is free to use from 9am Saturday to 8pm Sunday (GMT),
and I will immunise your internet connection personally to make sure your payment is
protected from keyloggers, hackers and active viruses.



UNATTENDED SERVICING

It is necessary to restart your pc several times during the service. If your pc requires a password
to log in to Windows or you use a Limited User Account then you must be present to enter your
login password every time the pc restarts and your Administrator password whenever I make
changes to your system that use the Run As command under XP or prompt the
User Account Control system under Vista.

If you would rather not sit through several hours of scanning, entering your password when required,
make sure you are using a user account with Administration privileges - check under your account
name under Start/Control Panel/User Accounts and make sure it says Computer Administrator.

I can then disable the Windows login screen for the duration of the service so you won't need to
enter your password after every restart.

I can create an Administrator account for Vista users so you won't have to enter your
password every time my maintenance work prompts the User Account Control system.

And I can install Copilot OneClick to keep you connected to the service
without having to reconnect manually after every restart.

It is advisable to change all your passwords at least once per month
in order to keep your email and login passwords safe.


BACKUP

  Before connecting to the service you should Backup your important files and folders.


UNSTABLE PCS

If you cannot connect due to a very unstable pc,
try my advice under Windows Repair to make it stable first.


WARNINGS

  Your Windows disk may be required for system repairs,
if it is not genuine then you should not use this service.

It is advised that you also print this out so you can refer to it for guidance if a problem occurs.

Illegal Windows Disks, Serial Keys and Windows Reactivation

This service requires the use of Microsoft's 'Windows Genuine Advantage' (WGA) before your Windows installation
can be updated. Microsoft can disable access to your own pc if you cannot supply them with a valid serial key.
If you suspect your Windows serial key is not legitimate then it is advised you do not proceed with this service as
there is no going back once WGA is installed.


Illegal Windows Disks and Serial Keys

 This service requires the installation of Microsoft Windows Genuine Advantage software which validates the
authenticity of Windows.

 If your Windows installation is from a cracked copy or is otherwise illegal I'm afraid this service may cause your
system to become unusable if it cannot be validated with a legitimate serial key.

 You will be prompted to validate and Activate Windows for 5 days after which time Microsoft locks you out of
your own pc, requiring a full reinstall of Windows (causing potential loss of data held by the operating system)
and use of a legitimate serial key to access updates.

 This is due to the Windows Genuine Advantage tool checking your installation for dubious elements that may reveal it to be
illegal. If you know you have a genuine Windows installation disk and serial key then it is safe to proceed with the service.

 If you are unsure whether your Windows installation has been legally obtained or you don't have the Windows serial key,
then it is advised that you do not proceed with this service. If you do proceed then it is advised that you backup any
important data beforehand because you may be locked out as described and the only solution would be to reinstall
your Windows copy at your own risk.


Windows Reactivation


 If your Windows installation has not been updated since you purchased your pc, or has not been updated for several years,
it is likely that this service will cause your Windows installation to require validation with the Microsoft validation server.

 This is due to the installation of the Windows Genuine Advantage tool which is a standard part of this service and is a
necessary process now required by Microsoft before you can update your Windows installation.

 If as part of the Windows Update process Microsoft determines your Windows installation requires validation then
you will be required to enter your Windows serial key. This will usually happen after installing Windows Service Pack 2
(containing the Windows Genuine Advantage tool) and occurs after the reboot.

 You will be prompted to validate and Activate Windows every day for 5 days and if a valid serial key is not entered
Microsoft locks you out of your own pc, requiring a full reinstall of Windows (causing potential loss of data held by the
operating system) and use of a legitimate serial key in order to access updates.

 If you find you cannot validate your serial key, if for example your internet connection fails to respond, then you may
have to contact Microsoft customer support - you will be provided with a contact telephone number for your location
to validate your serial key.

 If you are worried about sending your serial key over the internet while you believe your pc to be infected by malware
you can use telephone validation instead, but rest assured that most malware with remote access capability would be
inactive during the validation process as it can be used before the boot-up process finishes.

 If you know you have a genuine Windows serial key and are willing to go through the process of Windows validation,
then it is safe to proceed with this service.

 If you are unsure whether your Windows installation is legal or you don't have the Windows serial key for your installation,
then it is advised that you do not proceed with this service.

These security programs provide a pretty solid level of defense to the average pc.
To test the defenses of your current security programs go to Leaktesting and if necessary install Comodo Firewall.
Because everyone's pc is set up in a different way one pc may have problems
with this suggested list where other pcs do not, for more advice see my guide to Antivirus software.
