Backup

NOTE: If your pc doesn't boot up properly or you cannot access the desktop properly try following the advice in my Windows Repair section.

Since you can never know when a harddrive will break down it is vital to make a backup
at least weekly by copying all your important filesto a safe and separate place like DVDs, CDs, or an external harddrives.

Before you make a backup you should run antivirus scans of your computer so you don't copy any viruses to your backup.

Windows Backup

Microsoft has help on how to use Windows Backup under Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

To use Windows Backup go to Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Backup.

Select Back up files and settings, then select Everyone's documents and settings or Choose what to back up, click Next.
Under Choose a place to save your backup select the location of your external storage, click Next and your chosen files will be copied to it.

To use an external harddrive or external DVD/CD drive, or usb memory stick/pen drive/dongle, the Windows
service called Removable Storage (NtmsSvc) must be running. To switch it on run Removable Storage On.bat.

For backup storage I recommend buying an external harddrive the same size as all your important data.
If you buy one larger than your current harddrive(s) you don't need to choose what to backup, you can just copy everything to the external drive.
Only plug it in to your pc when you are making a new backup, disconnect from the internet while you make the backup, and keep it in the
safest lace you have - a fireproof safe, family member's home, commercial storage etc.

If you run a business you should make a backup of all company files at the end of every work day. Ideally you should be using a
commercial hardware-based backup system where all data is mirrored on different harddrives providing an instant backup of everything you do.
This DIY advice is a good starting point for small business backups. Other options are Offsite Data Storage Services (check your local business pages)
and Online Data Storage Services where encryption of your data beforehand is a must. A cheap solution I recommend is Comodo Backup
which has a simpler interface for scheduling what to backup and when, and can backup your data online with a Comodo Online Backup account.

Virtual Backup/Restore

DOWNLOAD  Windows SteadyState (only available for XP and Vista 32bit)
Windows SteadyState can return your computer and hard disk to its exact condition before the user touched it, simply by rebooting.
Your system can be more stable and consistent when you limit user access to control panel functions, network resources, and other sensitive areas.
This is the ideal security solution for a shared pc with many users. Set the pc up with all the software your users need and then lock-down the
system so that every time the pc is used only 'virtual' changes are made, when you switch off the pc all changes are lost, ready for the next user.

DOWNLOAD  VirtualBox
Professional-quality virtualization solution that is also Open Source Software.

DOWNLOAD  VMLite
Virtual environment software.
